A Freelance Finance Director Helps Business Owners & Managers Get More Profit and Less Worry
For the last 15 years I have worked with business owners and managers to help them get financial and business control for greater success.
Below are some brief success stories about these clients.
Of course, every business is unique, and has its own specific challenges and opportunities. Getting financial control, making better decisions based on creative thinking and analysis takes time, takes commitment and takes action.
But implementing just one approach from the many available can be responsible for consistent, on-going and sustainable improvements to the bottom line.
Moreover, working together the result usually involves less stress, better thinking and more focus for the client. That’s how a Freelance Finance Director can help you.
Really, it’s about mindset, action and focus. Applied – practically – to the things that affect the numbers that matter.

How a business owner who couldn’t get support for investment obtained funding for a radical change program which then delivered more sales and less cost every year.
MW is the head of a publishing company. The market was changing for this company. Sales were going backwards and they needed a radical overhaul of processes and technology. These needed heavy investment but he couldn’t build a strong enough case to get funding.
He’s good at publishing, but not good with financial planning. His approach lacked the rigour and credibility needed to get the investment approved. We looked at the ideas and turned them into a plan. We supported that with sound data and analysis that talked the language the lenders wanted to hear.
I accompanied the owner to present the proposal for funding, which was then approved. He got the investment and could then focus on delivering the complex plan, knowing the financial matters were under control.
Net result: £2 million increase in revenue each year, and £250k cost reduction each year. Investment payback in less than 2 years at bottom-line. MW focused on what matters to make the business successful. He has control of the financials.

How a business owner focused on one area to improve his profits.
TS owns a warehouse fulfilment company. Their profits were going down and costs were rising out of control. He didn’t know where to start.
He’s a clever guy, who’s great with people and focused on customer service. But he was frustrated at the results – and wanted to deal with all the problems.
Together, we worked out where the biggest impact was. We looked at different ways of dealing with that. We decided which way was best, based on agreed factors. We built the plan. He worked that plan brilliantly. He focused on what mattered, and what would make the difference.
Net result: Costs reduced by 20%, back in control. Staff turnover improved. Service levels better than ever. TS able to focus better, and clearly seeing how to grow the company.

How a call centre manager bought her own villa in Spain while improving the performance of her department.
DS manages a call centre of 150 staff. This call centre had data and numbers coming from everywhere. Everything was analysed – time per call, revenue per employee, time spent in the toilet!
The service levels were going down, and her desired solution was to add more people on the phones. She couldn’t convince lenders that this was a good solution, and she didn’t know how to proceed.
With so many numbers around, her problem wasn’t a lack of data, it was a lack of meaningful information. Together we worked out the reason for service levels reducing. Then we looked at different options to solve that. The final solution was not to increase the number of people, but to improve the productivity of each call – looking at time and revenue.
That gave the focus, and the business case she needed to improve things.
Interestingly, she took this new way of looking at numbers and focusing on what’s important, applied it to her personal life. She prioritised differently and realised her dream of owning a villa in Spain! Now she’s getting what she wants at work and home.
Net result: service levels up, costs level, revenue up, profit up. DS focused on what’s really important and delivering great results – and providing clear and motivating leadership to her team.

Perhaps more important than these stories are the many, many business owners and managers who have improved their understanding and control of their key numbers – and how that’s enabled them to get better results, more credibility and less pressure. They are focusing on what’s important for them, with support that works.
